Angus Gilchrist Wynne, Jr

Six Flags Theme Parks were founded and developed by Angus Gilchrist Wynne, Jr., an American businessman who lived from January 9, 1914, to March 12, 1979. Six Flags Over Texas, Six Flags Over Georgia, and Six Flags Over Mid-America were his three original theme parks, and he oversaw their creation and construction (now Six Flags St. Louis).

Following a trip to the recently opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California, Wynne came to the conclusion that his native Texas should have its own amusement park. Under Wynne's direction and that of the Great Southwest Corporation, with the support of numerous New York City investors, preparations for such a location started in 1959. In August 1960, work on the park and the Great Southwest Industrial Park, which is located next door, began. Before his wife informed him that "Texas ain't under nothing," Wynne had planned to rename the park to "Texas Under Six Flags." France, Spain, Mexico, The Republic of Texas, The Confederate States of America, and The United States of America were the original "six flags," which stood for the six nations and groups that have governed Texas.

History

Originally, the phrase "Six Flags" referred to the six different governments that have ruled Texas: Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the United States (Union), and the Confederate States of America. [8] Although many of the original areas from the first three parks have been replaced, Six Flags parks are still divided into various themed sections.

The Great Southwest Corporation, founded in 1957 by Angus G. Wynne and other investors, is where Six Flags Theme Parks got their start. Six Flags Over Texas' construction began in 1960, and the park debuted the following year for a brief (45-day) season. A Native American village, a gondola ride, a railroad, some Wild West shows, a stagecoach ride, and "Skull Island," an adventure attraction with a pirate theme, were among the park's original features.

There was also a trip through a wilderness full of animated puppets on French riverboats called "LaSalle's River Adventure," which was modeled after the historical La Salle Expeditions in the late 1600s. With the exception of the railroad, all of those attractions were eventually replaced by new ones, including an observation tower, roller coasters, swing rides, log flumes, and shoot-the-chute rides.

Growth and acquisitions

Six Flags Over Texas, the first Six Flags amusement park, was sold in 1966 to a Pennsylvania Railroad subsidiary. The Pennsylvania Railroad was actively looking for non-railroad investments in an effort to diversify its revenue streams (in 1968, the Pennsylvania Railroad merged with the New York Central Railroad to form Penn Central Corp which was absorbed into Conrail in 1976). With the new owners, more capital was available in greater amounts, allowing for geographic expansion and park additions. The last two original parks built by the company were Six Flags Over Georgia in 1967 and Six Flags Over Mid-America in 1971.

Six Flags acquired independent parks to fuel its expansion. Three amusement parks were acquired by Six Flags: AstroWorld in Houston, Texas, Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey, and Magic Mountain in Valencia, California. Following these acquisitions, Penn Central sold assets to Bally Manufacturing in 1982.
